About me
Jeffrey Shupp, MD, FACS, is the director of the Burn Center at MedStar Washington Hospital Center and an active member of the Regional Department of Surgery. Dr. Shupp is also the lead investigator at the Firefighters' Burn and Surgical Research Laboratory and the Director of Burn Research at MedStar Health Research Institute. He is a Professor of Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Biochemistry and Molecular and Cellular Biology at Georgetown University. He is also an Adjunct Professor of Surgery at the Uniformed Services University.
Dr. Shupp specializes in treating burns, trauma to the skin, including electrical and chemical injuries, complex wounds, and other skin disorders that result in skin loss, such as toxic epidermal necrolysis and Stevens-Johnson syndrome. Dr. Shupp received his undergraduate degree from the University of Maryland and his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia. He then joined MedStar Washington Hospital Center to complete a residency in general surgery and subspecialty training.
From his first encounters, the mechanisms of burn injuries, as well as the care for burn patients, became a huge interest of his. He immediately tailored his background in molecular biology research to focus on many aspects of clinical and translational burn and wound healing research. His clinical and research interests include innovative technologies for grafting and skin coverage as well as finding new strategies to improve the outcomes and care of individual patients.
Dr. Shupp's goal is for anyone with a burn injury to have access to MedStar Washington Hospital Center for care. The Hospital Center invests in the infrastructure that makes a burn center successful. The Burn Center exemplifies the team approach to care with dedicated rehabilitation therapists, nutrition specialists, pharmacy experts, and specialized nursing staff.
Philosophy of Care
"Injury to the skin has the potential to create a devastating insult to the body. My team consists of healthcare professionals that manage all aspects of cutaneous injury including critical care, resuscitation, infectious complications, pulmonary management for a patient with smoke inhalation, rehabilitation, follow-up and revision surgery. We also assist in all aspects of community reintegration and aftercare.
I see each patient of mine as a member of my own family. My priority is building a strong relationship with my patients and maintaining this relationship so that they feel comfortable reaching out to me if they have any issues in the future and will seek care without hesitation. Complications from a wound of any level of severity should be avoided at all costs. For this reason, I am available around the clock to consult with referring physicians."
